PORT OF AUGUSTA



The Port of Augusta is a major commercial port and military base. It consists of two large inlets: Porto Megarese and Porto Xifonio.

Dangers: it is advisable to keep exactly on the axis of the entrance.

Approach: it is advisable to keep exactly on the entry alignment (273°51').

Lighthouses and lanterns: 2820 (E 1838) - lighthouse with long white flashes, grp.2, period 12 sec., range 16 M on Capo S. Croce (visible from 146° to 021°); 2826 (E 1846) - (front) isophase beacon with white light, period 4 sec., range 12 M on Punta Gennalena, defines together with n.2832 the entrance alignment of 273°51' between the northern dam and that central (visible from 247° to 299°); 2832 (E 1846.1) - (rear) beacon with white flashing light, 5 sec., range 17 M on Dromo Giggia defines, together with n.2826, the entrance alignment of 273°51' between the northern and central dams (visible from 245° to 301° - two red lights, range 3 M on electric pylon indicate the free passage between the dams); 2844 (E 1847) - green flashing beacon, grp.2, period 10 sec., range 8 M near the head of the northern dam (Racon); 2850 (E 1848) - red flashing beacon, grp.2, period 10 sec., range 8 M near the north head of the central dam (radar reflector); 2852 (E 1858.4) - green flashing beacon, period 3 sec., range 5 M near the southern head of the central dam; 2853 (E 1858.6) - beacon with red flashes, period 3 sec., range 5 M near the head of the southern dam.

Sea bed: sand, seaweed and mud.

Seabed: from 1.50 to 8.00 m.

Radio: Vhf channel 16 - 11 (08/20).
Maximum length: at anchor any unit, in the dock 30/40 m.

Winds: 38% from W, 18% from NW, 13% from NE, 9% from SE with a speed of 2/4 m/sec.
Traverse: true bearings 225° and 315°.
Shelter: Porto Xifonio inlet - Seno del Priolo.
Areas reserved for pleasure craftIn the Cala del Molo at the quay for 310 m (depths from 1.5 to 8 m) and at the S. Andrea jetty for 70 m (depths from 1.5 to 8 m); both landings are managed by the Port Authority. It can be anchored in the Nuova Darsena only for exceptional reasons as these are moorings used for port traffic (depths from 3 to 8 m).
